Spotify reportedly eyeing video service launch
Music streaming service is rumoured to be planning to launch an on-demand video service to compete with the likes of Netflix.
According to Business Insider Australia, which cites unnamed sources, the firm is interested in funding and creating exclusive video content competing in the video space alongside other online players.
In September Danish broadcaster TV2 also reported that Spotify was in talks with HBO Nordic to redistribute its TV shows in the Nordic region. Citing unnamed sources, it too said that Spotify planned to create a new division for TV and movies.
However, speaking to DTVE earlier this month, Spotify’s global head of platform partnerships, Pascal De Mul, said that Spotify was interested in pushing its music app onto more smart-TVs and set-tops, but played down branching into video.
“On the content side, we are a music company, so we are still focused very much on music and that’s a territory that is big enough for us to keep ourselves busy for the next couple of years,” said De Mul.
